Light Tissue Interaction

Reflection:

- Fraction of total energy is "wasted" due to the reflection off the epidermis.

- The reflection off the skin varies from 20% in darker skin and 60% in lighter skin.

Scattering:

- Occurs because the light beam gets "bounced" or kicked around by connective tissue as it penetrates in the skin layers.

Absorption:

- Not only dependent on laser properties in depends on the amount of color the absorbing target possesses.

- Laser light can be absorbed by the skin's epidermal surface or by the material in the tissue called a Chromophore.

Stages Of Hair Growth

Anagen:

-Primary cycle of hair growth.

- Referred to as the "Birth" or "Active" stage.

- The papila provides blood and lymph feeding the hair cells.

- During cycle cell division and increased activity allow the hair to grow upwards.

Catagen:

- Secondary cycle of hair growth.

- Referred to as the "Transitional" or "Resting" stage.

- Cellular division and keratinization cesses and the follicle begin to shrink back from the papilla.

Telogen:

- this is referred to as the "Death" of the hair.
